TITLE: Dr. Eric Butterworth, Senior Biologist, Ducks Unlimited
SUBJECT: #24 Utikuma Lakes Project
SYNOPSIS: Ducks Unlimited is participating in the HEAD Wetlands study at Uitikuma Lake, about 100 kilometers north of Slave Lake. Biologist Dr. Eric Butterworth is supervising the Ducks Unlimited part of the study which involves developing an inventory of waterfowl and wetland habitat in the boreal forest. This is particularly important given the increased level of industrial activity in the boreal forest and the lack of scientific data for the region.

TITLE: Dr. Martin Paetz, Fisheries Biologist, Retired Director of Fisheries, Government of Alberta
SUBJECT: #24 Alberta's First Government Fisheries Biologist
SYNOPSIS: During the 1950's, fish biologist Dr. R.B. Miller established the first biological research station in Alberta. Among his students was a young biologist named Martin Paetz. Martin worked with R.B. Miller at the Gorge Creek Station and completed his Masters thesis under Miller's supervision. Before his death, he also paved the way for Martin to become the first staff fisheries biologist hired by the provincial government. In the early years, Martin undertook an inventory of fish and fish habitat in Alberta's rivers, lakes and streams. Later as his career progressed within the civil service, he took on the responsibility of developing regulations to protect Alberta's fish populations. Among his other work, Martin is known for the book, Fishes of Alberta, which he coauthored with Dr. Joe Nelson of the University of Alberta
