The Faculty of Nursing and the School of Business at the University of Alberta are spearheading an innovative program aims to get research "off the shelf" and to teach students how to translate medical research into practice. Janice Lander will chair the new Canadian Centre for Knowledge Transfer, which includes collaboration from several universities as well as different disciplines, including business, sociology and political science.

SUBJECT: #28 ARC work on dots and newsprint
SYNOPSIS: Scientist Joyce Chen spends her days looking at dots with the help of the Image Expert at the Alberta Research Council. These are the half-tone dots created when ink is printed on paper produced by Alberta Newsprint Company. The Image Expert allows the company to test the printing quality of its paper before sending it to customers, including USA Today. Otherwise, it might be a couple of months after production before any problems are identified. Printed paper is examined under a microscope that is connected to a computer where the print quality is examined and analyzed. The Image Expert may also prove useful is forensic work dealing with forged documents.
